Solutions for a New Millennium
Program Components
Academic Support, Tutoring
Academic support, with an emphasis on math and science, and tutoring is provided throughout the school year utilizing the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies. AVID is a classroom based college prep program targeting students of color and those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Mentorship
Mentors monitor student progress, establishing viable links to parents and community, report real time shortcomings or problem areas within the program.
Peer Support
Weekly peer support groups and life skills development sessions are held in an effort to address the personal circumstances that stifle positive student development and academic success. To further support students with greater needs, formal referrals systems with local mental health providers have been established.
Exposure to Health Professions
Exposure to the health professions will be arranged through visits to local health care establishments such as, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, St. Bernadine’s Hospital, Loma Linda University Medical Center and Kaiser Hospital-Fontana. Trips to college campuses are provided through the College Exodus Project. Summer internship and/or volunteer opportunities at locations such as Loma Linda University, provide participants with hands-on experience in health related professions.
College Preparation
Students receive one-on-one assistance completing college applications, financial aid forms, scholarship applications, personal statements and registration for SAT/ACT.
Parent Involvement
The College Exodus Project has a strong parent involvement component that entails a detailed orientation and ongoing opportunities for parent/guardian participation. New components are added to offer additional information on the education process for health professions.
