CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Advocacy

LEAVE NO MONEY ON THE TABLE

A three-tiered strategy
created by BLU Educational Foundation which utilizes state-wide, regional,
and local initiatives to increase FAFSA/Dream Act completion rates and
educational equity throughout the Inland Empire.

RACISM DECLARED A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY!

Members of the Rethink Safety Coalition produced a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis in San Bernardino County. The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adopted the resolution making San Bernardino the first county in California to do so.

The Board also directed County staff to form a new Equity Element Group of the Countywide Vision project to promote and increase equity in San Bernardino County. Once formed, the Equity Element Group would be comprised of community members and experts in healthcare, education, economic development, law and justice, and other fields to create a path toward promoting and increasing equity within the county.

AB 705
CALIFORNIA
COMMUNITY
COLLEGES

The bill requires that a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one year timeframe and use, in the placement of students into English and math courses, one or more of the following: high school coursework, high school grades, and high school grade point average.

SAT / ACT
REQUIREMENT
WAIVED IN CALIFORNIA/ ACT

The University of California Board of Regents unanimously approved the suspension of the standardized test requirement (ACT/SAT) for all California freshman applicants until fall 2024. The suspension will allow the University to create a new test that better aligns with the content the University expects students to have mastered for college readiness.

AB 2635:
INCLUDING AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE LCAP

Black students are the lowest-performing student group next to students with disabilities. AB 2635 would add "lowest-performing student subgroup or group” as a new category under the funding formula. With money targeted to subgroups based on test scores.

Public Lands

The focus of this program is to learn about the historical significance/connection Public Lands have to Black history as well as any contribution landmarks have had in the cultivation of the Inland Empire.

Census

BLU Educational Foundation has partnered with My Black Counts to ensure that African Americans are accurately counted and represented in the state of California. Census data helps us build political power and provides access to quality health care, better transportation, better schools, affordable housing, and the college funds we need to thrive.

Voter Engagement

BLU realizes the importance that voting has regarding every aspect of the way we live. Which is why it essential that we let our voices be heard so that we can help push policies and candidates that represent and benefit the needs of the African American community.
