OUR STORY

OUR MISSION

BLU Educational foundation is a federal 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation with the mission to provide educational and human services programming to youth, adults and organizations in order to build healthy, productive communities.

A VISION FOR CHANGE

In 2009, BLU Educational Foundation (BLU) took root in California’s Inland Empire, founded on a simple yet powerful belief: every student deserves access to quality education and the opportunity to thrive. What began as a local initiative has grown into a transformative movement, breaking barriers and opening doors for thousands of students and families.

Led by Dina L. Walker, a dedicated advocate for educational equity and racial justice, BLU was built in response to systemic challenges facing Black and Brown communities. The goal was clear: create a pathway for students to achieve their dreams, no matter their zip code or circumstances.

A LEGACY OF IMPACT

From awarding our first scholarships in 2010 to launching the College Exodus Project, which has helped over 10,000 students access college admissions and financial aid, BLU has remained committed to action and results.

We sealed our first school district contract in 2011, expanded our mission with the Soul Brothers Servant Leadership Camp and Soul Sisters Leadership Academy, and became a force for policy change—helping to pass California Assembly Bill 469 (FAFSA Completion Bill) in 2021.

Through initiatives like African American Parent Leadership Training, Changing the Game Initiative, and the Black Equity Initiative, BLU has not only shaped policy but also empowered families, educators, and students to advocate for themselves.

OUR FUTURE: THE MOVEMENT CONTINUES

Today, BLU stands as a leading force for change, receiving support from major philanthropic organizations, including the California Endowment, Weingart Foundation, and the James Irvine Foundation.

Through programs like the Institute for Civic Engagement, we are training the next generation of community leaders, ensuring that those historically left out of decision-making spaces have the tools and knowledge to take their rightful place in leadership.

We are more than a nonprofit. We are a movement. A community dedicated to equity, empowerment, and transformation.
