FROM DORMS TO DOLLARS: REAL ANSWERS TO BIG COLLEGE QUESTIONS

ree

We recently took to Instagram (@bluedfoundation) to ask high school students: “What do you really want to know about starting college?” You delivered—and we’re sharing some of your top questions (and real-talk answers) below.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO MAKE FRIENDS?

Say yes! Say yes to events, study groups, or even hanging out after class. All freshmen are in the same boat and saying "Hi" can go a long way. Be open, be curious, and dont' be afraid to show up solo

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I FEEL HOMESICK?

It's 100% normal to feel this way! Stay connected with people back home, but give your new environment a fair chance too. Build a new routine and get involved. Structure can help create a sense of normalcy.

Above all, give it time. Most students are able to adjust by midsemester, but everyone is different. Trust us, the feeling will go away.

HOW DO I KNOW WHERE TO GET MONEY FOR COLLEGE?

Make sure you've completed your FAFSA every year (studentaid.gov). Also make sure you apply for scholarships every year, not just your senior year of highschool. Check your college's job board for openings.

If you're staying local for school, BLU hires current college students to work as advisors. Visit our job page to apply (bluedfoundation.org/job-opportunities).

HOW CAN I PAY FOR RENT WHILE AT SCHOOL?

Use your financial aid (yes it's allowed). Any money leftover after tution can be used for living expenses. Same goes for some scholarships. Ask your school's financial aid office about rent support or housing stipends. Resident Assistants (RAs) often get both free on campus housing AND a meal plan to go with it. If you still need support reach out to us!

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY DORM?
Here are a few ideas! Worried about cost? Check second-hand stores around college campuses for gently used student items.
