THE WHY BEHIND OUR WORK

On National Nonprofit Day, we'd like to pause and reflect on why BLU Educational Foundation exists in the first place. It's easy to talk about programs and events, but the
deeper story is about belief: what we believe our community deserves, and what we're willing to build to get there.
Our work is organized around four focus areas. Each one comes from a specific conviction about what it takes to build a stronger Inland Empire. Here's a closer look at all four, and why they matter.
Civic Engagement: Change Starts With Policy
We believe that long-lasting change doesn't happen until the policies shaping our community actually reflect the people living in it.
That's why civic engagement sits at the center of our work. Through BLU's Institute for Civic Engagement, the Inland Empire Black Education Agenda, and ongoing voter engagement and policy advocacy efforts, we push for policy change across education, housing, healthcare, climate, and reparations, while educating our community on the issues that affect them most. We don't just show up to advocate; we equip IE residents to advocate for themselves.
College & Career Access: Every Student Deserves a Path Forward
We believe all students deserve access to higher education and meaningful careers, not just the ones with the resources to find the path on their own.
Our College & Career Access programming meets students wherever they are in that journey: college advising, scholarship and financial aid support, internships, job readiness training, and career pathway programs. Whether someone is a high schooler exploring options or a college student working to stay enrolled, BLU is there to help them get where they're going.
Leadership Development: Leaders Who Serve
We believe it's important to cultivate leaders who have the heart to serve their communities.
Through our Black Public Officials Leadership Training and African American Parents Leadership Training, we invest in the adults who are already shaping our community, aspiring leaders preparing to serve in public office and parents advocating for their families and schools. Because building strong communities takes leaders at every level, we also extend that same commitment to the next generation through programs like Sol Brothers Servant Leadership Camp and Soul Sisters Leadership Academy, which train young people ages 14–21 to build character, strengthen cultural identity, and develop the leadership skills to give back.
The Arts: Culture Belongs to Everyone
We believe providing artistic and cultural opportunities is especially important given how prevalent the arts are in our daily lives.
Our arts programming spans three areas: curated spaces like the Black Arts Showcase that give Inland Empire artists a platform to be seen; arts exposure through field trips to museums, concerts, and exhibitions; and arts education woven directly into our career programming, so students can explore creative careers alongside every other path we open up for them.
This Is the Work. This Is the Why.
Four focus areas, one mission: building a community where people are engaged, informed, and equipped to lead. On National Nonprofit Day, we're grateful for everyone who has supported that mission alongside us, whether through a donation, a volunteer hour, or simply showing up.
